Meachers leads local, innovative reuse projects

Tuesday 7th October 2025

In a demonstration of environmental responsibility and local collaboration, Meachers, in partnership with toob and Global Marine, have successfully repurposed industrial materials to benefit communities and wildlife across the South.

Meachers News Release

As part of a mini sustainability project led by Meachers, wooden cable reels and pallets were donated to local groups for creative upcycling. This initiative has diverted waste from landfills. It has equally empowered schools and community centres to enhance their spaces:

  • Braishfield Primary School received 6 reels and 10 pallets, which will be transformed into garden tables to support outdoor learning and activities.
  • The Apple Tree Centre welcomed 1 reel and 1 pallet, soon to become a cosy reading table for children.
  • Oasis Southampton City Farm received 8 reels, which will likewise be upcycled into climbing frames for their goats, combining sustainability with animal enrichment.

Simultaneously, in a separate effort, Meachers facilitated the return of 13 pallets of used marine rope from Gibraltar aboard the CS Recorder. Previously destined for costly landfill disposal, the rope has now found a new purpose thanks to outreach to UK wildlife parks.

Monkey World responded enthusiastically, agreeing to repurpose the rope for primate enrichment. The cost is significantly lower than landfill fees, saving thousands of pounds and bringing joy to the animals.

Speaking on behalf of Meachers Global Logistics, Nikki Milton, Charity Ambassador, shared “These projects reflect our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and community spirit. It’s been a pleasure to lead these initiatives and see how simple acts of reuse can make a meaningful difference.”

If any other local groups could benefit from similar support, Meachers would encourage them to reach out.

Paul Deslandes, Managing Director, Telecoms at Global Marine, said:

“We’re proud to transform materials previously destined for landfill, giving them new purpose and reducing waste across our global fleet. Championing sustainability is one of our core values as a business, and this initiative marks a very unexpected, but exciting step forward in our commitment to responsible, innovative reuse. A big thank you to Meachers for partnering with us on this initiative, one which we hope is just the first of many.”
