Trainee Cable Engineer

This role provides the opportunity to develop the technical skills and offshore experience required to progress into the position of 3rd Cable Engineer. Working within the vessel’s Cable Engineering department, the trainee supports cable operations, maintenance, and testing activities while gaining practical, hands-on experience in a live operational environment.

As part of the ship’s crew and operating within the vessel’s command structure, the role contributes to the safe and efficient delivery of cable installation and repair operations.

Under the guidance of senior Cable Engineers, the individual will build knowledge of cable systems, equipment, and procedures while developing the competencies required for career progression.

Key Responsibilities of Trainee Cable Engineer

The role holder will:

  • Support the safe and efficient day-to-day operation of the Cable Engineering department.
  • Assist with departmental tasks as directed by the Chief Cable Engineer and Cable Engineer.
  • Contribute to cable engineering activities associated with ongoing operations, including installation and repair projects.

Technical Support

  • Assist in meeting the cable engineering requirements of offshore operations.
  • Support activities within the test room, ensuring logs, records, and operational data are accurately maintained.

  • Assist with the maintenance, testing, and calibration of cable engineering equipment.
  • Develop familiarity with technical data, documentation, and records relating to cable installation and repair work.

Operational & Compliance

  • Ensure all relevant procedures, manuals, and company standards are followed.
  • Maintain accurate records and support effective documentation practices within the department.
  • Contribute to a safe working environment by adhering to company safety policies and procedures.

Salary and Benefits

Employed through Global Marine Systems Guernsey Limited, (GMSG), you will earn a starting salary of £36,000 as a Trainee Cable Engineer (TCE), along with a competitive benefits package that supports your wellbeing and long-term career.

Minimum Entry Requirements & Competencies

Minimum Qualifications

 
All applicants must meet the following baseline requirements:

  • Successfully pass an ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate
  • Be eligible to obtain a C1/D US Visa
  • Have no criminal record

Hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Higher National Certificate (HNC) in:

  • Electrical or Electronic Engineering
    or
  • Time served as an engineering apprentice involving electrical experience
