    Junior Systems Technician

    The Junior Systems Technician is a multi-skilled, entry-level offshore role supporting both the Cable Engineering and Subsea departments during vessel operations.

    Working as part of the ship’s crew, the role contributes to subsea intervention, cable installation, and maintenance activities, while gaining hands-on experience across a range of technical disciplines.

    Operating under the overall authority of the Master and within the vessel’s command structure, the Junior Systems Technician assists with subsea and cable jointing operations, supports remotely operated vehicle (ROV) activities, and helps ensure that all equipment and systems are maintained to operational and safety standards.

    The role offers a structured pathway to develop technical expertise across subsea and cable engineering functions.

    The Role of a Junior Systems Technician

    The Junior Systems Technician will:

    • Work as part of the vessel’s crew, adhering to shipboard procedures and supporting safe and efficient offshore operations.
    • Assist across both cable and subsea departments in a flexible, multi-skilled capacity under the guidance of Systems Technicians, Cable Engineering Officers, and Subsea Engineers.

    Subsea Operations

    • Under supervision, assist in piloting and operating ROV systems and handling associated equipment.
    • Support pre- and post-dive checks, fault finding, routine servicing, and preventative maintenance of submersible systems.
    • Develop familiarity with submersible operating procedures, safety systems, and umbilical handling.
    • Maintain awareness of electrical power systems and apply appropriate safety precautions.

    Cable Operations & Jointing

    • Assist with optical fibre jointing activities to required specifications.
    • Support maintenance, testing, and calibration of jointing and X-ray equipment.
    • Undertake practice joints in line with quality control standards.
    • Assist with the operation and maintenance of cable engines and associated hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
    • Participate in cable lay, repair, and plough operations as required.

    Operational Support

    • Carry out cable and subsea watchkeeping duties during operations and within control rooms.
    • Log operational data accurately and maintain records of stores and consumables.
    • Support inventory control of tooling, consumables, and spare parts to ensure operational readiness.

    Safety & Compliance

    • Be assigned emergency roles on the vessel Muster List and participate in drills and real incidents.
    • Assist, where required, with inspection and basic maintenance of vessel electrical safety systems (e.g. fire detection and alarm systems).
    • Follow all company procedures, including safety, environmental, and permit-to-work systems.
    • Comply with relevant statutory and industry standards (SSEMS, STCW, Flag State requirements).
    • Report defects, incidents, near misses, and unplanned events in line with company procedures.

    General

    • Undertake additional duties within the scope of the role as directed by senior personnel.

    Salary and Benefits

    Employed through Global Marine Systems Guernsey Limited,  (GMSG), you will earn a starting salary of £36,000 as a Junior Systems Technician (JST), along with a competitive benefits package that supports your wellbeing and long-term career.

    Minimum Entry Requirements & Competencies

    Minimum Qualifications

     
    All applicants must meet the following baseline requirements:

    • Successfully pass an ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate
    • Be eligible to obtain a C1/D US Visa
    • Have no criminal record

    Hold a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Higher National Certificate (HNC) in:

    • Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical / Electronic Engineering

      or

    • Time served as an engineering apprentice, with relevant practical experience
