Cadets Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQ page! Here, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about our Cadetships and a future career at sea. Whether you’re a prospective cadet, a parent, or a career advisor, this section aims to provide you with the information you need.

Q: Do I get paid when doing a Cadetship

A: We pay you all the way through your Cadetship whether at college or onboard the vessel. During phases at college if you are staying in halls of residence or rented accommodation we will pay a weekly subsidy.

Q: How long are the periods at sea when doing a Cadetship

A: Generally the trip lengths are between 3 and 6 months. However, we are flexible if there are family holidays and we will try to plan around these.

Q: What kit do I need when going to sea?

A: You will receive a complete kit list. Global Marine will provide branded tops and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Additionally, you will need to bring your uniform and casual clothing. Initially, you must purchase your uniform, but you will receive a one-time payment of £150 for your uniform about 6 to 8 weeks into the course.

Q: Do I travel to the ship on my own?

A: You will join the vessel during a crew change, so you will not be on your own for long haul flights. For first trip Cadets we will link them up with an Officer travelling to the ship. Ideally they would meet at the departure airport if this not possible at the transit airport. The cadet will be given the mobile of the person travelling. The intention is for this process to happen during the 2nd sea phase.

Q: Is there a phone number if I experience difficulties when flying?

A: Pre departure, all flight details along with your joining letter and agents numbers are provided. You will also be added to the “Global Marine Cadets” WhatsApp Group, where the Marine Superintendent can be contacted.

Q: If I need someone to talk to what do I have to do?

A: When you are onboard the ship the first stop is to talk to your Line Manager. This would be the Master or Chief Engineer. You can also contact the Marine Superintendent via the WhatsApp Group. You can also go to a friend onboard who can help and make sure your concern is addressed.

Q: If I want to change from one Cadetship to another is this possible?

A: Once you have started a Cadetship you cannot change and this includes attempting to start a cadetship with another company. This is why we advise you talk to us directly and do as much research as possible before you decide which path to take.

Q: Is there internet onboard?

Our ships are equipped with Starlink, allowing all electronic devices to connect to the internet. However, due to the presence of over 50 other people onboard, only one device per person can be connected at a time.

Q: Do you cater for various diets?

A: When the vessel is alongside in port, three set meals are provided each day, featuring a starter, a choice of two main courses, and a dessert. Cold cut meats and salads are also available. When operational, an additional midnight meal is offered as the ship operates 24 hours. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-related dietary requirements are all catered for.

A career at sea  FAQs

Q: What is the average length of a rotation at sea?

A: The rotation of time at sea for a Marine Engineer typically follows a schedule of several months on duty followed by several weeks or months off duty. The exact rotation can vary based on the company, type of vessel, and specific employment contract. Common rotations include:

  • 2 months on / 2 months off
  • 3 months on / 3 months off
  • 4 months on / 2 months off

Some companies may offer shorter rotations, such as 1 month on / 1 month off, especially for engineers on offshore support vessels or shorter routes. It’s essential to check the specific terms of employment with the hiring company as rotations can differ widely.
