Cable Retriever

In recognition of the high standard of weather observations undertaken voluntarily at sea

Global Marine’s Cable Retriever and her crew have been given an excellence award from the UK Met Office for sending excellent quality meteorological data back to them which are used in their forecasts.

The vessel places within the top twenty percent of the Met Office’s registered observing fleet for 2020 weather observations at sea, with particular respect to quality, timeliness, accuracy and quantity of data.

Last year, Cable Retriever sent 507 observations, which helped the Met Office with the following:

  • Forecasts and warnings to help ships and other offshore operators to avoid severe weather conditions at sea
  • Input to computer models that predict the future state of the atmosphere
  • Provision of meteorological information over the long term that aids our understanding of the global climate.
